Cinnamon Roll French Toast

I can’t think of a more comforting breakfast than French toast.  My mom has always added cinnamon to her French toast egg batter, so the idea of making it with cinnamon rolls instead of bread and letting it bake in the oven sounded pretty amazing.  I’ve come across a few different recipes online lately for cinnamon roll French toast as a quick and easy family breakfast for the holidays, so I decided to put my spin on the concept and I added fresh orange zest (my latest obsession) and candied pecans!  This is one of the easiest recipes I’ve ever made, and the casserole smells amazing while it is baking.  This recipe can be prepared Christmas morning in about 10 minutes and popped in the oven and ready to serve in 30 minutes.  Cinnamon roll French toast is the perfect dish for everyone in your family and circle of friends on Christmas morning.

What I used:
2 cans refrigerated cinnamon rolls with icing
1 tbls melted butter
4 eggs
1/3 cup milk
1 teas vanilla
1 tbls cinnamon
zest of 1 orange
handful of candied pecans
Optional:
maple syrup or maple cream

How I made it:
Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.

Pour melted butter into a deep baking dish or pie plate.  Cut each cinnamon roll into quarters (doesn’t need to be exact) and place in baking dish.  Whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon and orange zest and pour over cinnamon roll pieces.

Bake for 30 minutes or until the top is golden brown.  Immediately top the casserole with the reserved icing and top that with candied pecans.  Serve with just the icing or add maple syrup if you’d like to be extra indulgent.
